The South Belton Middle School 7th Grade A Team traveled to Lamar Middle School for its second game of the season, battling throughout a night filled with big plays from both teams. The Tigers ultimately fell 26-10 but continued to compete until the final whistle.
Lamar struck first with a pair of big runs early in the second quarter, taking a 14-0 lead. South Belton looked to answer before halftime. On a key third-and-12, quarterback Carson Mueller connected with Brendan Jacobs on a 20-yard pass behind the Lamar secondary. Jacobs made the catch but was tackled immediately after the reception. The clock eventually ran out with Lamar holding a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, the South Belton defense came up with a big stop on third-and-long. Mason Knosky broke through the Lamar offensive line and recorded a sack in the end zone for a safety, putting the Tigers on the board and cutting the deficit to 14-2.
The Tigers threatened to score on the next drive. Mueller found Adin Castillo on a bubble screen, turning the catch into a 25-yard gain before being forced out of bounds at the Lamar 25-yard line. Jeremy Zachory followed with two tough carries, moving the Tigers down to the 5-yard line, but the drive stalled with a South Belton fumble.
Lamar added another touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, but South Belton responded with one of the biggest plays of the game. Brendan Jacobs took a sweep and raced 70 yards untouched for a touchdown. Everson Jimenez added the PAT, bringing the Tigers within 18-10.
South Belton had another opportunity late in the fourth quarter. Jacobs continued to make an impact, eclipsing the 100-yard mark on a jet sweep. Jacobs chose to stay in bounds and delivered a highlight-reel hit, running directly through a defender before breaking free for a 40-yard gain. The big play put the Tigers in position to score, but the drive ended with a South Belton turnover before they could reach the end zone. Lamar then added a late touchdown run on fourth-and-long to make the final score 26-10.
The Tigers showed plenty of fight throughout the game and produced several explosive plays on both sides of the ball. South Belton will now return home for its first home game of the season next week against the Midway Panthers.
